Another gem in football has been unearthed from Malabar, thanks to diligent training given by Corporation Football Academy in Kozhikode. T.P. Sourav, a student of Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School in Kozhikode and player of Corporation Football Academy, has been selected for the two-week-long International Youth Football Tournament organised by F.C. Internazionale Milano (Inter Milan) at Milan in Italy.

The striker was handpicked by the coaches of F.C. Internazionale Milano from 30 players in the Tata Tea Jaago Re-Inter Milan football camp held at Kolkata for the past two weeks.

He is the only Keralite selected for the international event scheduled to be held in August last. “I am extremely happy.

The list was read out in our camp and I was on cloud nine. Every football player will have a dream to play in Milan and this is a tournament hosted by Inter Milan, I have no words to describe it,” said Sourav, who is on the way to Kerala after the camp.

Sourav was picked from the inter-school matches held from Kozhikode Corporation Stadium in February.

Representing Ramakrishna Mission School here, he was selected for the inter-zone matches to be held at Shillong.

From the tournament, 30 players were selected for a camp and after that 16 players were selected for the F.C. Internazionale Milano tournament.

“I will be there at Milan for two weeks. There we will be getting training at the club ground and also we will play in an international tournament,” says the 14-year-old.

He has also represented the state Under-14 team twice and has also donned the position of striker in Kozhikode District Under-14 team.

“This is a double delight for Corporation Football Academy. We won four tournaments this year and with the selection of our boy Sourav, we are hopeful to give more opportunity for youngsters,” says Kabir Das, coordinator and assistant coach of the academy.

About, 1500 players are getting opportunity through these tournaments and other promotional activities of Kozhikode District Football Academy and Sourav is the fourth student touring to Europe to take part in an international tournament, he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
