After the celebrated Subroto Cup campaign, private organisations are vying with each other to sponsor the Malabar Special Police HSS team which put up a good show.

The school team has received financial help and various offers for their upcoming season. Odyssia, a footwear manufacturer, has offered `1 lakh for the team’s performance in the Subroto Cup.

It also provided kits and other accessories for the players. Besides, Kerala Muslim Culture Centre gave a cash cheque of Rs 50,000.

The Malappuram municipality stepped in with Rs 20,000. Also, MSP employees gifted television sets to each player.

“We have received at least four offers from various companies to sponsor the team for the rest of the season. We are in touch with the MSP and hope we will be able to sign a contract soon,” said K.A. Rasack, director of Abbar Sports Marketing India.

“It is a nice trend and this proves football in the state could also fetch good support. It seems the government is also keen on helping the players as several ministers have promised funds to make the hostel facilities better,” he said.

“We are overwhelmed with the response for the team. We were treated as heroes at our hometown. These support will be a real boost to the morale of the students to pursue a career in football.

These students are from financially backward families. Such support should be there for the players,” said Benoy C. James, the coach of the MSP team.

“Last season, we played 10 tournaments and won seven of them. This year we have several invitations to play in various tournaments. We will be playing in Under-19 and under-17 tournaments,” he said.

Added the coach, “Hope, we will be having a better season next year. There should be more tournaments and the government may provide more facilities. It has been proven that the students have talent to match with even an international team,” he says.

MSP team were the first team from the state to play in the final of Subroto Cup inter-school football tournament held in New Delhi and were the only team that scored against Ukraine's FC Dynamo Kiev academy in the tournament. The team lost to the Ukrainian team 2-5 in the final.
