Time for Real Modric show
It's a crucial season at Santiago Bernabeu for a former Tottenham Hotspur star. No, Gareth Bale has not completed the transfer from the London club to Real Madrid. The player being mentioned here is Luka Modric, arguably a more skilful player than the Welshman.
The Croatian playmaker had a mixed season in his first year at the Real Madrid. His talent is undeniable but questions were raised if the player, who thrives while pulling the strings from the centre midfield, is an ideal choice for the `system' in which Real Madrid play . Under the then-manager Jose Mourinho, Modric struggled for starting berth.
Of course, he did have some great outings, like the Champions League second leg against Manchester United. But then again, Modric was a substitute there too, although the way he controlled the match after his introduction was commendable.
Unfortunately, that performance hardly got the credit it deserves as Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir, with his controversial decision to send off Nani for a high-footed challenge, dominated the headlines.
However, 2013-14 season promises to be great for the Croatian as the `system' to which Modric struggle to fit in has been dismantled after the ouster of Mourinho. New manager Carlo Ancelotti knows the importance of `playing beautiful.' Madridistas' major reasoning for despising Jose would have been the decision to drop the iconic Iker Casillas and the related friction in the squad.
However, the way Real played under Mourinho was also a concern for the Madrid faithful. For the fans, a club like Madrid, should play `beautiful football' and not the `effective style' adopted by Jose.
