‘Trying hard to adapt’
For seasoned midfielder Mehtab Hossain, it is a challenge of sorts. The 28-year-old has been handed the responsibility of initiating the passing game that newly-appointed national football coach Wim Koevermans wants to implement.
In an interview on the football federation’s website, Hossain speaks about the new style, the team’s goals and India’s campaign at the Nehru Cup. Excerpts:
How far have the players been able to adapt to the passing style?
We are working very hard as this is a new style. The boys are working diligently in keeping the ball on the ground. We were used to playing a one- or two-pass game among ourselves, but that is a thing of the past.
Does the new philosophy suit the team?
The coach has always maintained that we are professionals and have to play in any given system or formation. It is our responsibility to meet his demands by giving our best on the field.
What is the team’s goal at the moment?
Our mantra is to forget the past and not take any team lightly. The two victories in the Nehru Cup are done with and we are now concentrating on the match against Nepal. The coach insists on taking it one match at a time and not think about previous achievements.
What’s your impression of the young brigade in the team?
They are a talented bunch. From Francis to Lenny to Alwyn to Raju to Jewel and the rest... they have come a long way. They are here because they deserve their places. It’s an encouraging sign to see that the pool is talented and delivering.
