The Sports Education and Promotion Trust (SEPT) Under-12 team are slated to play on the smooth, artificial turf in Dubai during the second week of April. The team is participating in the Dubai International Super Cup to be held from April 8 to April 13.

The SEPT team will leave for Dubai on April 6 and will return on April 14. The tournament that is held for those in the under-8 to under 16 and youth category, will witness teams from South Africa, the United Kingdom and the Middle East vie with each other.

“This is the third time we are sending our team to a foreign championship. It is a great exposure for our kids. They will get a good chance to understand and learn about football outside our country,” says Arun K. Nanu, SEPT Chairman.

SEPT has 41 centres across the state and is a major organisation that gives training in youth development in the state. “The team that is going for the Dubai Cup has been selected from the SEPT festival held in January this year.

Last year the winners of the SEPT festival went to Malaysia,” he said. “We have selected the best students from our centres for the foreign tour. In the previous years the team went to Scandinavia and won several tournaments including the Coca Cola Cup held in Finland. We have also gone to Malaysia as part of our training programme,” Nanu said.

“We hope these tournaments will help us find good footballers. The tournament, which is in the Under-12 category, will be held in a league-cum-knockout phase,” he said.

“Players will have the golden opportunity to see and understand the facilities. We hope we can do well against the other teams in the championship,” Nanu said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
