Defender Denzil Franco has been an integral part of Churchill Brothers for long. With the team climbing to the second spot in the current I-League standings, he believes his team are strong contenders for the title this season.

Franco, who asserts that the squad are focusing on ball possession this season, speaks on coach Subhas Bhowmick and his own career. Excerpts:
Describe your association with Churchill Brothers.

It’s been a long, fruitful journey and I am relishing every bit of it. On top of that when you have a boss (Subhas Bhowmick) who treats you like family, you are bound to develop a sense of bonding.
Churchill haven’t been able to convert their consistency into winning trophies.
Winning stays the objective of every team whenever they take the field. We try to give our best and that reflects on the field. But winning and losing is a part of life. We are stressing on keeping possession. It’s simple — the more you keep possession, the more chances you create to score.
Your equation with coach Bhowmick?
He’s someone whom I have known since 2008. We share a great working relationship and he is a top professional. More than a coach, he is a father figure to all of us who commands respect from all for his simple yet realistic approach.
How has the stint with the national team helped you mature?
It has given me the opportunity to play with some class players. Being in the national team changes your perspective and outlook towards the method of play. Besides, when you have a coach like Wim Koevermans, who is capable in bringing out the best from players.
Who do you think are favourites to win the I-League this time?
There are some very strong contenders. But the manner we have been shaping up and improving with every match, I’d rather ask everyone to take note of us.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
