They used to say that clubs don’t spend big in January. That belief was metaphorically blown out of the water last year, with various Premier League clubs combining to spend over £210 million on transfers. Though the tally might not reach that high this season, there is every inclination that some of the clubs will be extremely busy during this transfer window.

Chelsea for one, will be anxious to find a centre-back during this period. Not only is Alex set to leave, but David Luiz has been erratic this campaign; leaving the once formidable Chelsea defence highly porous. At the time this article was written, Chelsea had agreed a £7 million deal with Bolton for Gary Cahill. However, it has been alleged that Cahill’s wage demands are unreasonable.

Staying in London, Thierry Henry looks all set to re-join Arsenal on a two-month loan. Gunners are in desperate need of a player who can lift the scoring responsibilities off Robin van Persie’s shoulders. Over on Merseyside, Liverpool should be looking for a forward as well to compensate for Andy Carroll’s goal return as well as Luis Suarez’s absence through suspension.

Nearby in Manchester, City look certain to get rid of Tevez. However, most eyes are fixed upon the entrance of Old Trafford. Manchester United have been hit by an injury list with all outfield players having spent time on the sidelines at one point or the other.
