The young and the restless of EPL
Last week’s column spoke against forming a prediction of Arsenal’s season on the basis of their draw against Newcastle on the opening weekend.
Events since then, however, have strongly reinforced the opinion of those who are dismissing Arsenal’s chances of winning silverware this season.
The Gunners lost their first home tie against Liverpool in ten years. An already weak squad has been weakened further by the loss of Emmanuelle Frimpong (Suspension) and Laurent Koscielny (Injury). Samir Nasri has completed his move to Manchester City and Arsene Wenger is facing a two match ban handed to him by UEFA.
A myriad of problems which will result in Arsene Wenger putting out the weakest line-up he has ever fielded to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.
United have their own injury concerns, especially in defence. However, the atmosphere inside Old Trafford is rather optimistic in light of their team’s performance against Tottenham on Monday. Sir Alex Ferguson, who chose to field his youngest line-up in Premier League history, was delighted with what he saw.
So were the fans, who must marvel at the talent and eagerness shown by players such as Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Johnny Evans, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck.
Thoughts of Wesley Sneijder have seemingly vanished as excitement grows over a group of young British players, who some believe, may fill the void left by the retiring Class of 92.
So come Sunday, we shall witness a clash between two teams at the opposite ends of a spectrum. Ten years ago, the outcome of this fixture would have gone a long way in determining the Premier League champion. That is no longer the case. Indeed, MUFC may justifiably believe that genuine competition lies elsewhere.
Therefore, a win tomorrow for the Red Devils will be met with satisfaction rather than delight. For Arsenal, a victory is not a must.
Even with a full strength team, a win against United is not certain. The players need to put in a 100%. Nothing less will appease the fans.
