Bhullar targets PGA cut
Winning the tri-sanctioned 1.8 million euros Avantha Masters would have left golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar saying “Mission Accomplished”. But the 24-year-old, who had to settle for a second place despite a brilliant final round of eight-under 64, went home taking the “positives from the week”.
Bhullar’s efforts earned him his biggest European Tour prize purse of 200,000 euros, besides taking him to the top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
“I was hitting straight through the tournament and my iron-striking also improved. Over the years, I have grown mentally, My course management has also improved a lot,” said Bhullar, who finished three strokes behind South African Thomas Aiken at 20-under, a score that the Indian had predicted to be the winning one.
Bhullar said a few tips from his coach on swing helped him turn in a card of 20-under.
“I was actually worried about this week and then I spoke to my coach. We worked on some of the mistakes I was making. We also exchanged swing videos and he told me what to do,” he said, adding he adopted an aggressive approach last week.
“I wanted to try for a win and my caddie kept motivating me. Basically no one remembers the second place guy after some time. It is only the winner who stays in the history books. Being second or 40th does not matter,” he said.
Admitting that he was striking the ball better than ever, Bhullar said that the way Aiken putted made all the difference.
“Thomas was simply superb. And then he holed a fine birdie to finish in style,” the Indian star said of the South African.
Hopeful of making it to big tournaments including the World Golf Championships and the CIMB Classic in Malaysia, the Kapurthala-lad added, “My target is to qualify for the USPGA Championship this year. I’ll also look to consolidate my position in the years to come in order to make it to the 2016 Olympics.”
