Five in joint clubhouse lead on opening day
Five golfers were in the joint clubhouse lead on Day One of the PGTI Feeder Tour event being played at the Aravalli Golf Club in Faridabad, Haryana.
Local boy Ramesh Kumar, Raj Kumar Rawat of Lucknow, Delhi’s Pawan Verma, Sudhir Sharma from Meerut and Damodar Kumawat of Jaipur shared the top spot with scores of one-under-45.
Heavy rains on Monday night and Tuesday morning caused waterlogging on the fairways. Therefore, four holes — third, seventh, 12th and the 16th — could not be played, while the par for the first, second, eighth, tenth, 11th and 17th holes had to be reduced. As a result, the par for the first round was 46 instead of the usual 72.
Round one could not be completed on Tuesday as only 42 golfers out of 72 submitted their cards.
Ramesh enjoyed a great start as he hit within five feet on the second and sixth hole to score two birdies. He, then, picked up another birdie with the help of a magnificent second shot from 80 yards that landed within two feet of the pin. Ramesh had a contrasting back-nine as he bogeyed the 14th and the 18th. However, his score of one-under was good enough to give him the joint clubhouse lead on the first day.
“My hitting was very good today. I hit it quite close. This is a good start to the event and keeps me in contention. I want to perform well on my home course and make an impact on the Order of Merit,” said Ramesh.
Among the other joint leaders, Sudhir and Damodar also had three birdies and two bogeys, while Raj Kumar hit three birdies and a double bogey. Verma had four birdies against three bogeys on the day.
Abhinav Lohan was tied sixth at even-par-46 along with Pranav Kaul, Amardeep Rawat and Punir Rohit Kumar Mehta.
