IGU launches coaching camp in Srinagar
The Indian Golf Union, the country’s apex body for golf development, took a step forward in its move to initiate the sport in schools, launching a coaching programme in Srinagar.
A 10-day coaching camp, subsidised and executed by the Women’s Golf Association of India, has been introduced in the Valley for the students of Delhi Public School and Presentation Convent, said WGAI secreatry general Champika Sayal, a former golfer who started the sport in Srinagar and Gulmarg in 1971.
Orientation session for as many as 54 children commenced on Monday in two batches at DPS Srinagar, which also has golf academy facilities within the school premises, and the Royal Springs Golf Course.
Presentation Convent was represented by 30 girls (between the age group of 8 and 12) and DPS Srinagar had 23 (both girls and boys) students.
Sayal lauded the efforts of IGU’s National Initiative for Golf in Schools programme, aimed at promoting the sport in the Valley.
