Mukesh, Ajeetesh in fray for PGTI meet
Domestics tour regulars Mukesh Kumar, Harendra Gupta, besides recently-crowned DLF Masters champion Ajeetesh Sandhu will be the top draws at the `35 lakh PGTI Players Championship, to be held at the Poona Club course from Wednesday.
Others in the field include Shankar Das, Om Prakash Chouhan and youngster Abhijit Singh Chadha.
Overseas golfers in the fray are Mithun Perera (Sri Lanka), Anura Rohana (Sri Lanka), Kunal Bhasin (Australia), Anthony Choat (Australia) and Md Zamal Hossain Mollah (Bangladesh), while the local challenge will include Gurki Shergill, Rajiv Datar, Jaideep Patwardhan, Aditya Bhandarkar, Pravin Pathare, Saurabh Bhaduri, Sameer M. Shaikh and Sachin Nigade.
The event will be followed by the sixth leg of the Volvo World Golf Challenge on November 11, where amateurs from across the region will compete for berths at the national final.
The two best-placed finishers at each event will qualify for the national final, to be held later this month. The two toppers at the national final will win an invitation to compete in the world final of the Volvo World Golf Challenge next January.
Jaideep Patwardhan, chairman, Poona Club, said, “The PGTI Players Championship will witness an elite field tee up at the Poona Club golf course. The tournament will go a long way in further popularising the sport in the city of Pune. The course is in great shape and we look forward to an absorbing contest this week.”
The course at the Poona Club, laid way back in 1918, has lightning-fast greens and each hole contains at least two or three well-placed bunkers to test golfers’ skills. The course also boasts of some huge water bodies.
