Sangwan bags year’s first crown
DLF Golf and Country Club’s Piyush Sangwan clinched his first title of the year, winning the Toyota-IGU Southern Indian Juniors at the Karnataka Golf Association in Bengaluru on Friday.
The Gurgaon boy, who was tied third on the penultimate day, emerged victorious with a splendid three-under round on the deciding day, ending wit a four-round total of 294 (73-76-76-69) to make him the sole victor in the combined Under-18 and Under-14 categories.
“It was a good day. I got a little lucky and even though I missed a few putts, it worked out for me in the end. It was especially good because I had to power through severe cramps post the 13th hole,” Sangwan said.
Shubhankar Sharma from the ITC Classic Golf Resort and Viraj Madappa of the Tollygunge Golf Club, Kolkata, finished second and third with scores of 296 (75-76-73-72) and 300 (74-77-76-73), respectively.
Sharma felt that he could have bettered his total had it not been for poor judgement on the 18th hole. “I was playing well. I was leading my group with a score of 3 under par at one point. I had a good shot but hit the floodlight on the 18th and that set me back,” Sharma said.
