Smriti takes 2-shot lead
Seasoned golfer Smriti Mehra turned in a birdie-birdie finish en route to a one-under 69 to open up a two stroke lead over the field on the opening day of the second leg of the Hero-WGAI Women’s Pro Tour in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
The second place was shared by four that included Saaniya Sharma, Sharmila Nicollet, Neha Tripathi and Meghna Bal, all of whom shot 71 each at the Clover Greens.
Smriti would have had a much better finish but a hat-trick of bogeys from the 13th to the 15th spoiled her run. Overall, she had six birdies against five bogeys for a card of 69. Saaniya finished with a bogey, but for which she might have been in the sole second position. She began the day with a birdie and then had three more on the back nine. She also bogeyed the third and sixth and double bogeyed the fifth. Sharmila — like Smriti and Saaniya — started with a birdie, but failed to find another one. She bogeyed the ninth and the 15th to go one-over.
Delhi girl Nalini Singh Siwach carded two-over 72 and was at the sixth spot.
Vani Kapoor, who lost the first leg playoff — the Hero-KGA tournament — last week, struggled to a 76. She birdied the third and fifth but then had a four-over back nine as she ended the day at 76.
The event carries a prize purse of `5 lakhs and is the second in the schedule of the Tour, that has 12 events.
