Sujjan on return trail

Sujjan Singh

Chandigarh golfer Sujjan Singh enjoyed a brilliant run last year when he won the Taman Dayu Championship in Indonesia, his maiden win on the tour, till fate intervened in the form of a wrist injury. The golfer, after recovering from the injury, featured in a couple of tournaments at the end of the season last year and is now looking ahead to participate more on the Asian Tour.

A part of the Dev Ellora Chandigarh team in the Louis Philippe Cup, Sujjan spoke on his plans for 2013. Excerpts:
Can you reflect on your 2012 season?
To be honest, it was really half a season. I got injured in August, just before the start of the second half. I was scheduled to play tournaments in the second half of the Asian Tour but couldn’t participate. But later I got to play a few events. I played at Jeev’s (Milkha Singh) Invitational Shubhkamna Champions and I also took part in the season-ending event in Kolkata. That was really positive and I’ve worked really hard over the winter break that I had.
How are you looking forward in your career this year?
I’ve got a medical exemption, so I would like to play a lot more on the Asian Tour. And, like with any other golfer, the big hope is to win a tournament because the monetary prize that you win and also the exemption that you receive are very crucial. It gives you the security of having a job for the next few years on a good Tour. I think that’s going to be important. And if I get the opportunity, I’d like to go for the European or the US (PGA) Tour qualifier at the end of the year. I’ve got my goals sorted out and hopefully I’ll achieve them.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
It has to be the win on the Asian Development Tour. I think it was a record — the lowest score shot by an Indian overseas that year. I had many positives to take from that particular week. It really has been a highlight of my career till now.
You are a part of the Chandigarh team in the Louis Philippe Cup. How have you prepared for the tournament?
I think we have a good team, all three of us are very consistent players. Harendra (Gupta) is, of course, in in the top 3 in the country and had a great round last time in the same tournament. He’s a proven winner and has won a couple of times last year. Ajeetesh, when he won for the first time beat Jyoti (Randhawa) in a play-off on his home course. He is a consistent player who’s got a fantastic temperament and an equally good all-round game. And I also had a decent season last year until I got injured and was out for a few months but I’m looking forward to it. I was in Jaypee (Greens), as an amateur for a year and already know the course very well.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
