Team Airtel pip rivals
The Jaypee Greens Golf Course in Greater Noida witnessed keen competition among 200 amateurs including former cricketer Kapil Dev for the top spot in the Northern India qualifiers of the World Corporate Golf Challenge.
Team Airtel, represented by Nobel Dhingra and Simran Gujaral, who totalled 74 points emerged champions on the second day of the event. Following them were Saran Prasad and Rohit Jhawar, representing Team Accenture, who led after Day One but had to be content with second place with a total of 71.
The top two teams from this round will be joined by teams from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata for the national finals scheduled to be held in April.
The winning team at the national final will represent India at the world finals to be held at the picturesque Carrick Golf Course in Scotland from May 7 to 12. A total of 25 teams from around the world will be vying for the top honours at the world finals. The Indian team have done well in the past at the world finals since their maiden appearance in 1999 and the team qualifying will look to repeat the feat of winning the championship by Credit Suisse in 2008.
Apart from the top place finish in Spain, teams from India have been runners-up twice, in 2010 and 2011. In the last edition of the event, the McLeod Russel team notched up a tied eighth finish alongside the team from England.
