Top field for PSPB inter-unit golf
India’s top amateur golfers have converged for the 33rd PSPB inter-unit golf tournament at the par-72 Digboi Club Golf Links, the event being hosted by Indian Oil Corporation.
The four-day golfing extravaganza which is also the most prestigious event on the Indian Golf Union’s amateur calendar began with Thursday’s one-day Stableford event and will be followed by the two-day main event to be played on a stroke play format.
Each team have a minimum of three and a maximum of five members. The three best scores will count towards the day total and the two-day aggregate will decide the team championship. An individual strokeplay competition will further add to the excitement of the proceedings.
Defending champions Oil India are spearheaded by the in-form Udayan Mane, the current leader on the IGU Order of Merit list, and include former three-time Sri Lankan Open Amateur winner Simarjeet Singh ranked third, Manav Das (no. 4), Abhijeet Chadha and Samarth Dwivedi (no. 5).
Others to watch out for are Gagan Verma, Trishul Chinnappa (both representing the hosts, IOC), Karan Taunk, Syed Saqib Ahmed, Vikram Rana (ONGC) and Jasjeet Singh (GAIL) amongst others. Sabeena Chowdhary representing IOC (Assam Oil Division) and Gowri Monga (GAIL) are the only two lady participants in a total field of 120. “Staging the PSPB Golf Championship in this historic oil town of Digboi is relevant as the golf links is steeped in history, just as is the Digboi Refinery. This is a natural course with an interesting and challenging layout of 72 par. I am sure the golfers will soak in the scenic beauty around the course while also countering the challenges the course has to offer,” said Barun Barpujari, executive director, IOCL (AOD) and chairman of the organising committee.
