‘Lighten’ing effect

Out with your scarves, umbrellas and sunglasses — it is summer time! The sun is blistering and the fashionistas are readying to face the heat. If you thought that summer might scare people from slapping on makeup, you guessed wrong. Switch to healthier and lighter options. Moisturisers and homemade packs promise to put the glow back on your face.

Ayesha Abu, a Bengaluru-based makeup artiste, stresses on avoiding thick foundation that leaves prominent lines and marks on your face. “A tinted moisturiser is a must this summer, rather than a foundation that will reveal marks and lines on your face. Most important wash your face often to beat the heat,” she says. Makeup expert M.S. Pallavi seconds this, saying, “Wash your face as much as you can. If you want to avoid using a face wash, opt for a more herbal option and use besan (gram flour) to rinse your face.”
Colours are going to play a very important role this season. But before playing with colours, it is important to understand your skin tone. Ayesha’s advice is to avoid dark or bright hues — especially for the day. “Use nude and light colours for all the morning and brunch parties. One can experiment with colors for evening parties.”
For all those demanding natural options, Pallavi recommends ingredients like aloe vera, ice and besan. “Before applying makeup, use the pulp of aloe vera to scrub your skin instead of a chemical-based scrub. Aloe not only scrubs the skin but also nourishes it,” she says. Karina Smrinoff of Dancing with the Stars and pop singer Victoria Beckham swear by aloe vera to nourish their skin. “Rubbing ice is a good alternative and helps give a shine. Dilute moisturisers with water and they work like a charm. A pack of besan (gram flour) and milk is perfect for all those with sensitive skin. It helps control oil secretion and leaves the skin soft and fresh.”
As far as colours go, Pallavi shares a quick tip. “For those on the fairer side, avoid using lip-liners if you’re using a darker shade of colour. And those with dusky complexions could use a gloss instead of lipstick.” She talks about getting the balance right: “It is very important to balance your look. If you have heavy eye makeup, sober down your lips. What you do with your hair is critical. One could just tie it in a pony to get that classy, chic look just like Priety Zinta or Katrina Kaif. And you’re all set to step out in style.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
