Fire and ice
The latest trend in the world of beauty is a combination of ancient principles with a sprinkling of modern technology — fire and ice! This technique of combining heat and cold is pervading the realm of beauty through massages, treatments and facials.
“The idea behind a hot and cold treatment is that the heat helps to expand the blood cells and remove toxins, while the cold helps identify and freeze the areas where toxins are present. These can be in the form of massages, which are often done using hot and cold lava or marble stones, or as a facial by alternating jets of air, or even during a hair spa procedure,” says Sharmila Vaid, a wellness therapist and masseur. In fact, beauty experts’ say that one of the shortest ways to instantly brighten up one’s complexion or hair is by washing alternately with hot and cold water.
There is, of course, an ancient principle at work behind these methods. “One can’t randomly fluctuate between temperatures because this can be harmful for the body. There are certain points in the body which are designated for the flow and ebb of energies and one has to be careful to direct the flow of heat only there to derive maximum benefit. These points are identified based on Reiki or even Chinese healing practices,” adds Sharmila.
Apart from cleansing and detoxing the body and giving the skin a flushed appearance, these treatments also have another benefit. “What happens during these procedures is that since there is a change in temperature, your body begins to sweat and this in turn causes fat to melt and calories to burn. That’s why it is such a favourite with those who are watching their weight,” says Dr Nalini Raimedhi, a skin specialist who also consults at a spa. She goes on to add, “The hot stones and the massage techniques used here have a very calming effect on the mind and body. Often, we also use aromatherapy oils with these treatments and this provides more relaxation.”
