Birsa Munda boys triumph
Birsa Munda Vidyapith of Rourkela put up an exemplary show, thrashing Amritsar’s Springdales Senior School 7-1 in the final of the 41st Nehru junior boys hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Friday.
The Rourkela boys got down to business in the very first minute. Skipper Sumit Toppo scored a field goal to put the team ahead, before strikes from Nitin M. Tigga (5th minute), Suman Kujur (17th) and Toppo (29th) ensured a healthy 4-0 lead.
The Amritsar team, who had impressed in the run up to the final posting big wins, struggled to match their fancied rivals on the day and suffered due to poor finishing.
A goal from Kawaljit Singh in the 44th minute helped Springdales reduce the margin, but it did not deter Birsa Munda boys, who scored at will.
Suraj Minz (51st) and Dipsan Tirkey (59th) added to the tally, while Tigga (61st) rounded off a well-deserved win.
Army Boys Sports College, Bengaluru, pipped Guru Harkrishan Public School, India Gate, 2-1 in the third place play-off.
