Birsa Munda down GHPS
Springdales Senior Secondary School of Amritsar and Birsa Munda Vidyapith, Rourkela, registered contrasting wins in their respective semi-finals of the 41st Nehru junior boys hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Thursday.
Springdales boys enjoyed almost total supremacy against Bengaluru’s Army Boys Sports College, defeating them 4-1, while the Rourkela boys were stretched to the limit by the Delhi-based Guru Harkrishan Public School, India Gate, before prevailing 2-1 in extra time.
In the first semi-final, Sprindales School were up 1-0 in the 16th minute via an own goal. The team extended the lead through Satwinder Singh and Jobanpreet Singh, ensuring a 3-0 cushion.
The Bengaluru team pulled one back in the 51st minute through Sahil Kumar, before a 67th-minute strike from Kawaljit Singh settled the issue in Springdales’ favour.
Later, Birsa Munda Vidyapith withstood a strong challenge from the local lads, to post a hard-fought win. Prakash Barla turned out to be the hero of the day, scoring off a penalty corner in extra time to hand his team a place in the final. Earlier, Suraj Minz (13th minute) put the Rourkela boys ahead, before a field goal from Sonu Kumar (35th) negated the effort.
