Defending champs survive scare
Last year’s winners Birsa Munda Vidyapitha, Rourkela, pipped CRZ Senior Secondary School from Sonepat 4-3 in a Super League match of the 30th Nehru sub junior boys hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Wednesday.
It was a sea-saw battle but Rasanand Khalkho’s 69th minute goal pulled out the win for the Orissa side.
Sonepat drew first blood in the 13th minute through Vinay but Khalko soon equalised.
After changing ends, Sibrel Lakra (44th minute) increased the tally for the Orissa outfit. The Sonepat boys also cut down on their errors and regrouped to level the score in the 48th minute, and within five minutes they were leading 3-2, courtesy Vinay’s second goal.
But the happiness of the Sonepat boys was short lived as Minil Topol (68th minute) scored off a penalty corner to tie the score, while Khalko sealed the win in the very next minute.
In the second match of the day, 2011 runners-up Government Senior Secondary School from Jalandhar drew with Lucknow’s Guru Gobind Singh Sports College 2-2 to pick up a point each.
The match was locked 1-1 after the end of the first half. Lucknow’s Rahul Verma (14th minute) was the first to score, while Navjot Singh equalised for the Jalandhar side.
The second half followed the same script as Inderjit Singh (50th minute) and Aditya Yadav (60th minute) scored for Jalandhar and Lucknow, respectively.
