India end on a disappointing note
India ended their campaign on a disappointing note playing out a 4-4 draw against Japan to finish last in the four-nation Hamburg Masters hockey tournament at the Uhlenhoster Club in Hamburg on Sunday.
Olympic champions Germany thrashed Holland 5-1 to clinch the title. Morits Furtse and Florian Fuchs, the latter adjudged the promising player of the tournament, struck a brace each, while Christopher Zeller netted once. Tim Jenniskens reduced the margin for Holland.
The habit of conceding late goals returned to haunt India, who frittered away a 4-2 advantage to end with just a point from the tournament.
India dominated from the start and were up 2-0 in no time, courtesy goals from Amir Khan (6th minute) and Danish Mujtaba (15th minute).
Japan, however, clawed their way back with. Sajkamoto Hiroki finding the net in the 23rd minute as the teams went into the break. Japan equalised in the 49th minute through captain Kazuhiro Tsubouchi, who converted a penalty corner.
Drag-flicker Sandeep Singh (55) and striker Bharat Chhikara (56) scored in quick succession to make it 4-2, but a late surge from the Japanese undid the Indians’ work. Katsuyoshi Nagasawa scored five minutes from the hooter, while Tsubouchi struck in the last minute much to India’s dismay.
