Shahbad, Gwalior girls in final
Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Shahbad, entered the final of the 19th Nehru juniors girls hockey tournament with a convincing 9-0 win over Directorate General, NCC, team at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Wednesday.
In Thursday’s final, the Shahbad girls will be up against Kiddy’s Corner Girls Higher Secondary School of Gwalior.
The Gwalior side beat Govt Model Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, 3-1 in the second semi-final.
The first semi-final was a one-sided affair with the NCC girls no match for the fluent game of the Shahbad school. Manjit, Navneet Kaur and Amrinder scored a brace each in the first half itself to put their opposition on the back foot.
Manjit scored the first goal in the fifth minute when she converted a penalty corner. From there on, the Shahbad girls kept the pressure on the NCC side with repeated attacks resulting in goals at regular intervals.
By the end of the first half, Shahbad were ahead 6-0.
In the second half, NCC tightened their defence but that didn’t prove enough to stop the goal fest. Gurleen struck a brace while captain Reet also got her name on the board to complete the 9-0 rout.
The second semi-final saw a keen contest but the Gwalior school eventually went through with a brace from Priyanka Wankhede. Priyanka opened the scoring in the fifth minute through a field goal and then Preeti Dubey doubled the lead with a strike in the 13th minute as their team lead 2-0 at half time.
Priyanka then sealed the contest with her second goal in the 46th minute before Chandigarh earned a consolation goal through Pooja six minutes before time.
