Sundergarh boys emerge champs
Town High School from Sundergarh rode on Sushil Ekka’s brace to beat Jalandhar’s Government Senior Secondary School 3-2 in the final of the 30th Nehru sub-junior boys Under-15 hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Sunday.
The Sundergarh outfit opened their account in the 13th minute through Tekei Kujur, before Navjot Singh converted a penalty corner in the 31st minute to find the equaliser for the Jalandhar boys.
After the lemon break, Inderjit Singh (42nd minute) put the Jalandhar side ahead. Thereafter, the Orissa boys regrouped themselved and cut down on their errors as Ekka sounded the board in the very next minute.
He added another in the 69th minute to clinch the title for his team.
Meanwhile, Guru Harkrishan High School from Jammu hammered Government High School from Kurai, Madhya Pradesh, 10-3 in a league match of the Under-17 boys tournament, that got under way on the day.
Sarabjeet Singh scored a hat-trick while Sivam Sharma and Robin Singh struck a brace each for the Jammu outfit.
In other matches of the day, St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School from Mapusa, Goa, pipped Kerala’s Government Higher Secondary School of Kollam 4-3, while Sainik School from Bijapur defeated Gujarat’s Baroda High School 2-1.
