Surinder leads India to easy win
Skipper Surinder Kaur led from the front, scoring from two penalty corners as India trounced Canada 4-1 in the third hockey Test to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series at Tamanawis Park, Surrey on Sunday.
India thus won the India-Canada Cup having beaten the hosts in the opening game while the second match was drawn.
India led 2-1 at half time after Anna Kozniuk had given Canada the lead in the 10th minute.
Surinder restored parity in the 17th minute and four minutes later Jasjeet Kaur Handa the lead. The Indian captain struck again in the 38th minute before striker Rani Rampal sealed Canada’s fate in the
54th minute.

Sharath falls in semifinals
New Delhi, June 20: National champion Achanta Sharath Kamal was upset by Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov in a lopsided semifinal before the latter went on to lift the Indian Open ITTF Pro Tour title at the Yamuna Sports Complex here on Sunday, reports our correspondent.
The German downed 38th ranked Seo Hyun Deok of South Korea 11-4, 11-9, 11-2, 11-5 in the final.
World number 15 Ovtcharov showed no mercy in dismissing Sharath 11-4, 11-6, 11-8, 11-4. Deok defeated Gao Ning of Singapore 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 15-17, 11-9, 11-6 in the second semifinal. “I had no rhythm,” Sharath said after his loss. “There was no pressure on me. I wanted to give him a tough fight. I just could not get into that stage,” he said adding that his next event would be the US Open later this month before he competes in the Egypt Open from July 7-11.
In the women’s section, Sayako Hirano of Japan made short work of Singaporean Yu Mengyu 11-7, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 to claim the top honours.
Korea’s Lee Sang Su and Seo Hyun Deok won the men’s double title after defeating the Singapore combine of Gao Ning and Yang Zi 11-13, 12-14, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 9-11.
In women’s doubles final, the Chinese duo of Cheng I-Ching and Huang Yi-Hua subdued Li Jiao and Li Jie of The Netherlands 11-8, 12-14, 6-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6.
