2nd port: Government still at sea

The state is still undecided about a suitable site for the second major port. The Centre proposed a new port with an investment of Rs 7,000 crore. Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy included obtaining the principle approval for the port from the Centre in his 100-day agenda way back in January 2011. A meeting convened by the Chief Minister here on Thursday could not arrive at a decision on the location of the port.

Sources told this newspaper that the infrastructure and investment department officials gave a presentation explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each of the three locations — Nakkapalli in Visakhapatnam, Ramayapatnam in Prakasam and Duggarajapatnam in Nellore district. The Chief Minister told the officials that a consolidated proposal should be sent to the Centre as quickly as possible. I&I secretary Suneel Sarma informed the meeting — also attended by minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and chief secretary Minnie Mathew — that there were objections to Duggaraju-patnam because of its proximity to the Sriharikota space centre.

Sources said the finalisation of the location is taking time because the ideal location of Ramayapatnam falls in the exclusive zone of Krishnapatnam port and the state government has to take a bold decision to hand over land to the Centre for the second port. The Navy has raised objections with regard to Nakkapalli. The CM will meet the vice admiral on Monday on the issue.
