36-yr-old man dies after ‘restlessness’ in custody
A 36-year-old man who was arrested in connection with an extortion case by the Miyapur police, died early on Sunday at a hospital at Madinaguda. According to police, the deceased identified as P. Ram Reddy, developed restlessness and was hospitalised. The Shamsabad assistant commissioner of police, Mr Ch. Srinivas, who is investigating the case, said that three years back Ram Reddy used to supply machinery to one Mr Nagarjuna Rao, who had a flour mill.
On April 11, Ram Reddy called Nagarjuna Rao and demanded `10 lakh or he would kill Nagarjuna’s family. On the same day three people sent by Ram Reddy, namely Vikas, Sandeep and Rohit went to the flour mill of Nagarjuna Rao and threatened him again. The workers of Nagarjuna Rao caught hold of them and handed them over to the Miyapur police station. Based on the complaint lodged by Mr Nagarjuna Rao, the police registered a case against against Ram Reddy and the three under Section 385 and 34 of IPC. The police remanded them in judicial custody and started searching for Ram Reddy. On April 14, the police took Ram Reddy into custody from Gowliguda area of the city at about 9.30 pm.
Early on Sunday at about 4.30 am, he became restless and screamed of pain in the head and stomach. He was immediately taken to the Lalitha Gayathri Hospital Madinaguda where he had a cardiac arrest at about 5.30 am. Srinivas Reddy, father of Ram Reddy, who is a retired college lecturer cried inconsolably. “My son had some business in the city three years back and had to get money from some people in Hyderabad. In order to collect that money he left Nellore a week ago. I don’t know what happened later on,” he said and added, “The police called me to say that my son had some problem and asked me to come. When I reached the police station, nobody was there. I was told that my son died and was shifted to mortuary.”
