40 inmates of cherlapally jail found mentally ill
Over 40 inmates of the Cherlapally central prison suffer from psychological problems, a fact that came to light only after an inmate went on a stabbing spree on July 5, killing one and injuring four. It was found that the prisoner had been lodged along with other mentally ill persons and that could have provoked the incident.
After director-general of prisons T.P. Das submitted a report to the home minister the prisons department suspended a jailor and deputy jailor for negligence and transferred two deputy superintendents. The report, which points out that 42 inmates are suffering from various psychological and psychiatric illnesses and that the environment in which they are lodged is hardly good for their treatment, also blames the negligence of jail officials. The home minister has ordered the immediate appointment of a psychiatrist to check the condition of prisoners in all the jails.
