Aamir ‘booze’ show creates buzz

The ninth episode of Aamir Khan’s much talked about television show, Satyamev Jayate, found fierce endorsement on Twitter from celebrities and the general public alike. Aamir talked about the issue of alcohol abuse in the country. Many celebrities tweeted their appreciation of Aamir and his show for raising the issue. Actor Kabir Bedi tweeted, “SOCIAL DRINKING is legal, acceptable, fun. Alcohol Abuse is an ADDICTION that ruins lives. Let’s not advocate Prohibition.”

Director Shekhar Kapur acknowledged Aamir Khan for stirring up debates on important issues. He tweeted, “Aamir Khan and SMJ have got India talking, thinking, arguing. That’s so much more than other TV. Thank u Aamir.” While director Shirish Kunder tweeted, “Alcohol Abuse is a very serious issue. I request everyone to not abuse alcohol or to waste it.” Prominent media personalities also jumped on to the Aamir fan-bandwagon. “Since Aamir has warned against alcohol abuse, no Old Monk tonight. Limbu soda it is! Enjoy the game folks!” tweeted Rajdeep Sardesai.

But as always, humour also was prominent on the micro-blogging site with many users firing satirical jokes. A person on Twitter, Nikhil Trivedi, posted, “Aamir Khan chose Sunday morning to talk about alcohol abuse. When most alcoholics are asleep from the Saturday night hangover.” Another prominent satirical tweeter by the name Angry Bombay Girl, tweeted, “And if you ask Vijay Mallya ...he will say alcohol was never the problem ...but Deepika Padukone definitely was.” Meanwhile, there are reports that a second season of Satyamev Jayate is being planned.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
