The Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday launched the Telangana Vidhyarthi Maha Padayatra from five different places in the region.
More than 500 students belonging to all universities in the region are participating in the Maha Padayatra.
The 12-day padayatra will cover about 1500 kilometres in all districts of Telangana region. On Monday, the padayatra was simultaneously launched from Basra in Adilabad district, Singareni in Karimnagar, Pasupula in Mahaboobnagar, Parakal in Warangal and Bhadrachalam in Khammam district.
Speaking on the occasion, the ABVP leaders demanded that the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre honour the announcement made by the then Union Home Minister P Chidambaram of starting the process for formation of Telangana State.
They said that the Telangana students would continue their struggle until statehood is granted for the region.
They said that the padayatra was aimed at creating awareness among the people, especially the students, about the need for formation of separate Telangana.
The Maha Padayatra will conclude on December 7 in the Osmania University campus where a mass public meeting will be held.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and other senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party are likely to address the public meeting. (INN)
