ACB waits for cop to retire, charges him
The ACB has struck again in a corruption case, this time involving a retired IPS official. The bureau in a record first, has filed two chargesheets against J.M. Murali, one in a disproportionate assets case in Hyderabad and another in which he allegedly took a bribe to settle a land dispute in Vizag.
Mr Murali is the first IPS officer to be chargesheeted by the ACB in a graft case in the state. Mr Murali was arrested on April 28, 2007, when he was the superintendent of Vizag police, for accepting Rs 2 lakh to settle a land dispute. He was brought to the city where certain assets disproportionate to his income were detected.
Ex-IPS officer charged by ACB for illegal assets
IPS official J.M. Murali retired on March 31 and lost immunity that he enjoyed while in service, and the anti-corruption bureau (ACB), under director-general D Boobathi Babu moved in. The bureau filed its chargesheet in a city court on two counts: one under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly possessing Rs 2 crore disproportionate assets and falsification of documents for producing bogus loan certificates.
A chargesheet was also filed against his son and one Kasmit Bugga for falsification of documents where they allegedly got bogus loan claims to show as sources of income. In Visakhapatnam the chargesheet was filed on Mr Murali for allegedly accepting Rs 2 lakh bribe from one Dr Sridevi and her family for settling a land dispute. Mr Murali, who was then SP, allegedly intervened and got the land dispute settled and took his share of the pie. Another case filed by the CID regarding alleged misappropriation of Home Guard salaries was closed by the government then.
