The state government on Saturday made some big changes among the top IPS brass. The commissioner in-charge, Mr Anurag Sharma, was confirmed as the commissioner of police of Hyderabad while Mr A.K. Khan, who has returned from training in the US, has been posted as RTC vice-chairman and managing director.

Further, in a move to avoid legal tangles, the state government appointed APSRTC vice-chairman and managing director, Mr B. Prasada Rao, as chief of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, sidelining Mr Boobathi Babu who is probing the liquor scam cases. Mr Boobathi will continue to work in the ACB but only as an additional DG under Mr Prasada Rao. The confirmation of Mr Anurag Sharma as city police chief would have disappointed aspirants like CID chief, Mr S.V. Ramana Murthy, and additional DG, Mr N. Sambasiva Rao. However, the government concluded that Mr Sharma would fit the bill as he had successfully managed communal riots as in-charge commissioner of police and has earlier experience as DCP South Zone.

“Maintaining law and order will be my top priority and there will be no lenience towards the communal situation. I will also try to improve crime detection. Providing friendly policing to ensure that the police wins the hearts of Hyderabadis is another priority,” said Mr Sharma.

On the traffic front, he said, “Good work has been done so far and we will improve it further.” Regarding political affiliations of policemen, he said, “My approach will be absolutely neutral. Irrespective of political parties, whoever commits crimes or violates the law will be brought to book.” The new ACB boss, Mr B. Prasada Rao, is a 1979 batch IPS official.
