BIE’s improvement exam a big success

The Physics-II improvement exam conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE), for Inter second year students in May this year for the first time, has benefited nearly 1.13 lakh students, who could improve their marks for physics. Apart from that 1,08,127 students, who failed in the physics-II paper in March, have cleared the exam, by appearing for the advanced supplementary exams.

The state government was forced to direct the BIE to allow second year students appear for the ‘improvement exam’ for the first time this year after students and parents took to the streets blaming the ‘erroneous question paper’ for poor results. About 30 per cent of the students had either failed or had secured low marks in physics-II triggering state-wide protests.

J.S.V Prasad, the secretary of BIE, said, “as many as 1,55,512 second year students had failed in the physics exam held in March. Of them, 1,38,646 appeared for the supplementary exam and 1,08,327 have cleared the paper. Nearly 1.6 lakh students who secured lower marks than they expected despite clearing the paper also appeared for the improvement exam. Of them. 1.13 lakh students have improved their score.” Speaking to reporters after releasing the Inter second year advanced supplementary results, Mr Prasad said that the overall pass percentage in Inter exams, held in March and May, stood at 82.53, the highest in three years.

Out of the 5,46,955 students who appeared for supplementary exams, 3,60,040 have passed recording a pass percentage of 65.83. Girls outperformed boys with a pass percentage of 70.09 compared to 62.69 per cent recorded by boys. “Students can apply for recounting and revaluation of answer scripts of supplementary exams. For recounting, they have to pay a fee of Rs 100 per paper, and for revaluation including supply of photocopy of answer scripts, they have to pay Rs 600 a paper.
“Students must apply only at e-seva or Andhra Pradesh Online Centres for the purpose. Applications will be accepted only for five days from June 17 to 21. There is no scope for extending this deadline,” Mr Prasad added. While Visakhapatnam topped with 76 per cent pass, Hyderabad city remained at the bottom with just 54 per cent results.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
