Big birds take their positions
It was around 6 pm on Tuesday when a certain big bird became cynosure of all eyes at the Begumpet Airport. Clad in national flag carrier Air India’s colours, the much-awaited Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which took off from New Delhi’s IGI Airport around 4 pm, touched down ahead of the third International Exhibition and Conference on Civil Aviation, starting here on Wednesday.
The Dreamliner, reported to be inducted by Air India in a couple of months, reached Delhi after a 14-hour non-stop flight from Seattle, company officials said. It will be on static display at the five-day air show till Friday.
In fact, all 25 or so aircraft to be showcased during the event have already reached the venue. While the organisers are expecting about 8,000 business visitors on the first three days, Saturday and Sunday have been kept reserved for general visitors.
Primary objective of the event being business in nature, a meeting of all CEOs would be held on Wednesday to chalk out future strategies, as also to attract investments in the civil aviation sector and the country in general, and AP in particular. Dinesh Keskar, senior vice-president of Asia Pacific and India sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, will chair the meeting. Meanwhile, a security blanket has been laid out at Begumpet Airport, with every part of the airport put under CCTV surveillance and CISF and state police personnel taking up positions. No one would be allowed to enter the venue without entry pass, the organisers said.
