Biodiversity in Hyderabad has taken a hit: GHMC study
The biodiversity index of Greater Hyderabad has revealed a huge decline in various native species, with the number of fish species down from 78 to 12 in city lakes and amphibian species badly affected, it is learnt.
GHMC is preparing the biodiversity index with the help of various agencies, and it is due to release it during the CoP-11.
According to the findings, reptile species are relatively better off, as their habitat, the hillocks, is untouched in several parts of the city. It was also found that around 400 new species of ornamental plants have been introduced in the city.
“Reduction in the number of species is largely due to the heavy pollution,” observed Dr R. Hampaiah, chairman, AP Biodiversity Board, adding, the lakes are the worst affected due to effluents from industries.
