BJP T-resolution defeated in RS
The BJP-sponsored private member resolution on Telangana was defeated in Rajya Sabha on Friday following a walkout by both the BJP and the Telugu Desam members.
It was the third time a discussion on the private member resolution was taken up in the House after the resolution was introduced by Prakash Javadekar of the BJP a month ago.
Replying to the debate on the resolution, Union minister of state for home affairs Jitin Prasada said the Union government is planning to convene an all-party meeting to resolve the Telangana issue, once four more parties file their responses on the issue.
He narrated the events that followed the Centre's announcement on the issue on December 9, 2009. The minister did not give any assurance on statehood for Telangana. He merely asked the BJP member to withdraw his resolution.
Objecting to the Centre's indifferent attitude over the issue, Mr Javadekar claimed that the Centre is not keen on granting T-state and wanted to delay the issue forever.
He led the BJP members' walkout, “in protest of the Centre's callous attitude towards the just demand of Telangana state”. They were followed by TD members T. Devender Gowd and G. Sudharani.
Before the panel chairman P.J. Kurian put the resolution for voice vote and declared defeat of the resolution, TD member Gundu Sudharani had strongly advocated for the T-state and blamed the Centre and held the Congress equally responsible for the suicide of 700 innocent T-students.
