Building debris piles up in city
Indiscriminately dumped building debris, which causes traffic jams and chokes drains, has made corporators sit up and take notice after clean-up drives proved ineffective. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) does not have a dumping yard for construction debris. It needs separate storage and disposal facilities. Quite often, it finds its way into drainage lines, choking sewage. Due to the absence of a dumping yard, private contractors and builders dump debris near lakes and water bodies.
Now the corporators, irked by residents’ complaints, are keen to rid the city of debris. Mayor Majid Hussain wants the city to retrieve its clean and green image, as it has won “Clean and Green City” awards twice in the past. “I want at least one Clean and Green City award for Greater Hyderabad during my tenure as mayor,” he said. An enquiry has been ordered into the disappearance of garbage bins in the city. The improvement of civic amenities, including debris disposal and containment of the mosquito menace, are the MIM’s top priorities, the mayor said. GHMC TD floor leader Singireddy Srinivas said that a ‘debris removal department’ should be set up headed by an IAS officer, and without its NOC, water and electricity connections should not be provided to new buildings.
