CBI digs for quid pro quo investments

The CBI had searched offices of the companies and the residences of the promoters of the top businessmen involved and individuals who had invested in companies belonging to Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy. The first searches were conducted in August 2011. Officials had also later interrogated the industrialists on several occasions regarding the quid pro quo investments.

In the first chargesheet, the CBI had named Aurobindo and Hetero groups alleging that they had been given SEZ plots and in return they had invested in companies belonging to Jagan Mohan Reddy. A chargesheet was filed against Mr Nityananda Reddy and Mr Srinivas Reddy but no arrests were made. The CBI court has, however, issued summons for them to appear before it on May 28. It will decide whether to set them free on sureties or send them to judicial or police custody.

In the third chargesheet, the CBI named industrialist Ayodhya Rami Reddy of Ramky Group in connection with the Visakhapatnam Pharma City land irregularities and his investments in Jagan’s firms. In the FIR, the CBI had named Mr Pratap Reddy, Mr Potluri Vara Prasad and also companies like Mantri Developers, Dalmia Cements, India Cements and several other individual investors.

The CBI has also questioned several IAS officials who worked in departments like Investment and Infrastructure, Revenue, Industries and Commerce during YSR’s regime. The statements of ministers Dharmana Prasada Rao, Mopidevi Venkataramana, J. Geetha Reddy have also been recorded. Statements of Ms Sabita Indra Reddy and Mr Botsa Satyanara-yana will also most probably be recorded. They are all likely to be made witnesses in the case.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
