CBSE results: Tension, euphoria missing

Most city schools secured 100 per cent results in the CBSE Class X exams, which were announced on Monday evening. Several city students got A1 grade and a maximum grade point of 10. However, as marks have been replaced with grades since 2010, the usual euphoria associated with results was missing.

There were no “toppers” and the expectations, stress and anxiety levels among students, parents and school managements were minimal. Schools such as Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School, Jubilee Hills; Meridian School, Banjara Hills; Kendriya Vidyalaya Uppal-I and Uppal-II secured 100 per cent results. As many as 67 students from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan secured a maximum CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 10, while 12 students for Meridian School got a CGPA of 10 points. Similarly, 10 students from KV-I Uppal got a CGPA of 10. Most of the 45 KVs in Hyderabad region secured 100 per cent results.

Nearly 20,000 students had appeared for Class X exams from AP this year. Of them about 19,000 qualified recording a pass percentage of 95. Girls fared slightly better than boys. The grades were awarded on a nine-point scale for each subject. If a student scored between 91 and 100 per cent in a subject, he or she was given an A1-grade and a grade point of 10. A student scoring between 81 and 90 in a subject was awarded A and a grade point of 9. The practice of declaring compartment/ fail has been discontinued.

Grade Point Average in SSC from now on
The SSC board has finally decided to adopt the ‘Grade Point Average’ (GPA) method, along the lines of the CBSE, while issuing mark sheets to SSC students this year. The marks will not be announced while releasing SSC results on May 23. Grade points will be replaced with marks in SSC marks memos.
Besides this, unlike earlier, the total marks will not be printed on SSC memos. Even marks secured in individual subjects will be shown as grades and grade points. The final grade point will be the average of these grade points, secured in individual subjects. The SSC results will be announced on May 23 at 4.30 pm.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
