Centre to AP: Halt work on Polavaram
The Centre has directed the Andhra Pradesh government not to proceed with the construction work of the multi-crore, multi-purpose Polavaram Project till environmental matters are decided upon. This was stated by environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan on Monday in the Lok Sabha. Ms Natarajan said that a letter was issued on November 1, 2010, by the ministry of environment to the AP government, asking for reasons for not complying with the additional conditions of environmental clearance.
The state government responded to this by requesting the ministry to review the change in the scope of the project. Ms Natarajan said that till a favourable response comes from the state government, the orders issued on February 8, 2011, directing the AP government not to take up work on the dam, continue to be valid.
Replying to a question, the minister informed the Lok Sabha that after environmental clearance was given to the project on October 25, 2005, the state government proposed construction of embankments on the rivers Sileru and Sabari in Chhattisgarh and Odisha to avoid submergence in these states. A public hearing in Odisha and Chhattisgarh was recommended regarding the embankments. This is yet to be complied with by the state government, the minister stated.
