Centre’s view sought on Red sanders’ sale

A Division Bench, comprising Justice V. Eswaraiah and Justice K.G. Shankar of the AP High Court, on Monday sought the response of the Centre in granting permission for disposal of red sanders' logs. The Bench sought the response while dealing with a plea by former minister P. Shankar Rao. Dr Shankar Rao had moved the court, seeking a CBI probe into the entire transaction, alleging that the red sanders were being sold to specified beneficiaries at throwaway prices. He had also alleged that the Chief Minister and forest minister allowed three companies to export red sanders at throwaway prices.

The advocate-general told the court that the state government had no power to export the red sanders; the Centre had to grant permission for their sale or export. The Bench asked the assistant solicitor-general to return with instructions from the Centre.

Bench unhappy with leniency to policeman
A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar of the High Court, on Monday asked the state government to submit a report on facilities available at the observation homes in the state. The Bench was dealing with a case that had been taken up, based on a letter by Achuta Rao of Balala Hakkula Sangham, complaining that two minor boys, alleged to be involved in a theft, were handcuffed and kept chained in a police station at Hanmakonda.

The Bench expressed deep displeasure at the incident and asked assistant government pleader for the Home department Rachana about the punishment imposed on the police officer responsible for the act. When she replied that two annual increments were stopped, the Bench pointed out that this was not enough punishment for such a heinous act.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
