Centres will fix Aadhaar glitches
The Unique Identification Authority of India will soon set up permanent centres to rectify anomalies in Aadhaar cards, register change of address and inclusion or exclusion of the unique numbers from its central data.
Referring to complaints of errors in the cards, UIDAI chairman Mr Nandan Nilekani told the media here on Tuesday that the centres would help update records on a regular basis. While permanent centres are already in operation for electoral rolls and ration cards, Mr Nilekani said they would be integrated at a later stage. Appreciating Andhra Pradesh’s initiative in Aadhaar enrolment, Mr Nilekani said out of nearly 20 crore people enrolled across the country, about five crore are from the state.
“Duplication in getting social benefits could be avoided with the unique ID,” Mr Nilekani added. The authorities prepared cards for 4.5 crore people in the state, of which 4.32 crore were already dispatched, it was informed. UIDAI officials met CM N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and discussed the issue of starting the second phase of Aadhaar enrolment.
