Chandrababu Naidu in for more shock

Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s trouble with fence-sitters seems to be far from over.

Rumours are rife in party circles that some more party leaders, including Nuzvid MLA Chinnam Ramakotaiah, Vijayawada Urban party chief Vallabhneni Vamsi, two popular brothers from Rayalaseema, amo-ng others, are likely to cross over to the YSR Co-ngress or the Congress.

In a bid to check further exodus, Mr Naidu is toying with the idea to rope in brother-in-law and actor Balakrishna with a key post and ask him to undertake a whirlwind tour of Seemandhra and focus on Krishna district, following the exit of Gudivada MLA Kodali Venkateshwara Rao alias Nani.

Balakrishna has expre-ssed his readiness to wo-rk in any capacity in the party and promised eve-ry support to Mr Naidu.

Mr Naidu not only has to deal with trouble from within the party but also deal with external threats to his party from arch rivals like Congress, YSR Congress and TRS who are out to wipe out the party. Power struggle within the NTR-Nara clans has only added to his problems.

However, senior party leaders like Gali Muddu-krishnama Naidu and B. Gopalakrishna Reddy describe the desertions as a “passing phase” and assert that the party is strong. “There is no threat to the TD. It is as strong as ever. Herd mentality is the reason for some quitting,” Mr Krishnamanaidu said.

However, some party leaders doubt whether Mr Naidu can lead the party to victory in 2014.

“It’s a credibility problem for Mr Naidu within the party and with the masses after two successive defeats in 2004 and 2009 Assembly elections and subsequent rout in the bypolls. Some don’t want to take another risk in 2014,” is how a party leader summed up the situation in the TD.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
