Chinese media slams India
India’s successful test launch of the inter-continental ballistic missile Agni-V that has the capability of striking Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai evoked a measured reaction from Beijing. It said that the two countries are not rivals and enjoyed “sound” relations. The Chinese media, however, was not as diplomatic in its remarks and said India should not overestimate its strength.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Liu Weimin said, “China has taken note of reports on India’s missile launch. The two countries have a sound relationship.” “China and India are both emerging powers. We are not rivals, but cooperative partners. We should cherish the hard-earned momentum of cooperation,” Mr Weimin said when asked if the missile launch could have security implications for China.
Asked if the test launch would impact on regional stability, Mr Weimin said, “We hope Asian countries can contribute to regional stability and peace.” However, there were no comments forthcoming from the Chinese Emba-ssy’s press section on remarks being attributed to Chinese embassy sources saying that this will trigger an arms race.
