City shivers as mercury plunges 5ºC below normal
Minimum temperatures have fallen to a new low, with some places in the state registering a minimum temperature of 9 degree Celsius.
Hyderabad registered a minimum temperature of 12.4 degree Celsius, which is five degrees below normal.
Cold wave conditions will prevail in the districts of Adilabad, Nizamabad and Medak for the next two nights, according to the meteorological department.
Temperatures have fallen in many parts of the state and people have been wearing warm clothing even in the day time. Winter started early this year due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal, and together with the early onset of the monsoon, has resulted in rapidly falling temperatures.
Hyderabad meteorological department director G. Sudhakar Rao said the minimum temperature fell at a few places in Rayalaseema and Telangana, but rose markedly in one or two places in Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The lowest minimum temperature of nine degrees Celsius was recorded in Adilabad and Medak, he said. He attributed the fall in temperature to the depression over the Bay of Bengal and mooted the possibility of a cyclonic storm. There may also be an increase in rainfall around the state, he said.
