Civic body gets the stick as road caves in 2nd time

A portion of the main road opposite Model House at Punjagutta caved in on Friday at almost the same spot for the second time in less than six months, throwing vehicular traffic on this national highway out of gear.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation blamed the contractor wo-rking on an underground pipeline for the cave-in.

However, enquiries by this correspondent revea-led that the contractor, Sai Constructions, who was engaged in tunnelling work to lay eight-feet wide underground storm water pipelines across the road, had actually brought to the notice of the GHMC that storm water and sewerage water was leaking from some unidentified point beneath the road and that the seepage of this water would result in soil erosion and cavity fo-rmation, and this may re-sult in the road caving in.
