Complaint filed against GHMC
The residents of Maharajgunj have lodged a police complaint against GHMC commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu and South Zone commissioner Ravi Kiran for indiscriminate dumping of garbage near Imlibun Park by the civic body. They said that unbearable stench emanated from the garbage-transfer station forcing residents to keep their doors and windows shut all the time. Senior citizens cannot go out for a walk nor can children play outside due to this menace. “We have been repeatedly pleading that the garbage-transfer station to be shifted from here. We have also approached the State Human Rights Commission and also the AP Pollution Control Board seeking relocation of the garbage-transfer station,” said a resident of Maharajgunj.
Maharajgunj Welfare Association president, Ramesh Naidu said, “I have lodged a complaint with the police against municipal commissioner Krishna Babu, additional commissioner (planning) Dhananjay Reddy, zonal commissioner Ravi Kiran and the chief transport officer of GHMC. Garbage from several parts of city is being brought and dumped near Shivaji Bridge.” In 2005, a case was filed against the GHMC in the High Court by the Maharajgunj Welfare Association. The then MCH (now GHMC) Ms Chitra Ramachandran had requested the Association to drop the case and that she would ensure that the garbage station was shifted from there. But that was yet to happen, pointed out Ramesh Naidu.
Subsequently, the Imliban Walkers had once again registered a case in 2009. In response to it, the GHMC had promised to temporarily transfer the garbage station from there before January 2012 but failed to do so. “Recently, the High Court fined the GHMC Rs 10,000 as penalty for its delay in modernizing the garbage station,” Ramesh Naidu said.
“Yes, we have received a complaint. The locals say that the stench is the cause of severe environmental pollution and is a public health hazard,” said Ravi Babu, SI of Afzalgunj police station, where the complaint has been lodged. When contacted, the GHMC additional commissioner (health/sanitation) L. Vandan Kumar said that they will modernize the transfer station and ensure that “there is no stink” nor any kind of health hazard to the residents of the areas around the garbage transfer station. “We have given a commitment to that effect to the HC,” he said.
