Congress may court MIM

Following Wednesday’s AICC meeting, state Congress leaders are keeping their fingers crossed, hopeful of some political developments in the state before the Winter Session of Parliament commences.

Though they are still clueless on the nature of the political developments that may take place, they are confident of certain measures being put in place, especially in view of uncertainties in the state following withdrawal of support by the MIM, desertions in the party and the pending Telangana statehood issue.

While a confident Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy left for a three-day tour to Bengaluru and Rayalaseema district on Thursday evening, PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana left for Delhi for consultations with the AICC leaders.

Mr Satyanarayana, in an informal chat with mediapersons before his departure, said that the party might announce its decision on Telangana before the Winter Session of Parliament.

Meanwhile, both the CM and the PCC chief sent separate reports to party high command detailing the reasons and the background on the MIM snapping of its ties with the Congress.

According to sources, Mr Reddy, in his report, narrated the sequence of events revolving around the Bhagyalakshmi temple-Charminar issue and stated that the government did not violate any rule or law, but had indeed implemented the AP High Court orders in letter and spirit.

The CM also reportedly stated that MIM chief Asa-duddin Owaisi had been meeting YSR Congress lea-ders for the last few mon-ths and wanted to expand his party’s base with a possible tie-up with the YSRC.

Mr Reddy’s report is believed to have said that the MIM took the Bhagy-alakshmi temple controversy only as a pretext to snap ties with the Congress.

Mr Reddy also emphasised in his report that there has been overwhelming appreciation from across the state for the government’s handling of the law and order situation in the old city.

He also reportedly stated in the report that not a single opposition party raised its voice in support of MIM’s accusation that the Congress government was communal.

Sources said the CM gave a full account of the demands of MIM seeking several favours from the government. Significantly, some of the CM’s close confidants on Thursday came to his defense, publicly criticising the MIM for raking up a non-issue.

In his report sent to party high command, Mr Satyanarayana is reported to have said, “Had there been a political dialogue in place to convince the MIM leaders on the Bhagyalakshmi temple issue, things would not have gone to the extent that the MIM snapped its ties with the Congress”.

He reportedly observed that the state government’s administrative actions should have been coupled with political actions to avoid such happenings (withdrawal of support).

The PCC chief requested the party high command to intervene into the matter and depute a senior functionary to talk to Mr Owaisi to convince the MIM to continue supporting the Congress.

Mr Satyanarayana will meet AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad and senior leader Vayalar Ravi in Delhi.
