West Zone sub-inspector Khaleel Pasha said the police was working on the kidney racket case for two weeks. “Based on specific information we approached a broker at Panjagutta who agreed to arrange a kidney transplantation surgery done for Rs 15 lakh. The victim was to be paid Rs 5 lakh,” Mr Pasha said adding, “We have recorded the assistants saying that the doctor has performed several transplantations.”

The doctor had agreed to do the transplantation, he said. Poor donors from Srikakulam, Medak and Prakasam districts were falling prey to the racket, Mr Pasha said. When contacted over telephone, Dr Chada refuted the allegations and said: “This is a conspiracy by persons who do not like my growth. I did my DM in nephrology and am working as an assistant professor at Gandhi Hospital.” Claiming that he had “never done a transplantation”, Dr Chada said, “On Saturday, a patient came to my clinic from Secunderabad Nursing Home regarding a kidney problem. She said that she has got a donor relative. When the person claiming to be donor came to me I told him he should be a relative. Meanwhile, I saw a TV reporter accompanying them.”

He said he was not aware of the arrest of the brokers. Dr Chada claimed that Praveen and Prasanth were not his assistants. Prasanth, Dr Chada said, works at Secunderabad Nursing Home and sends patients to me. “I run only a clinic, not a kidney centre. I am in the field for the past 16 years. I tried to counsel Yadagiri who came to me,” said Dr Chada, who is on the panel of doctors of several hospitals.
